Ubud sits inland, up in the hills about an hour from our base in Canggu. It is outside our free
\ndelivery radius of 20 km, so delivery there is quoted by zone \u2014 tell us the address and we give you
\nthe figure before you book. Ubud is also one of our listed pickup points.<\/p>\n
Ubud is where a bigger engine starts to earn its keep. The roads out of town climb steadily \u2014
\ntowards Tegallalang, Kintamani and the Batur crater rim \u2014 and a small automatic scooter runs out of
\nbreath on the long gradients, especially with a passenger. A 230\u2013250cc single is the sweet spot:
\nenough torque for the climbs, light enough for the narrow village lanes.<\/p>\n
For the volcano loops and the ride east towards Sidemen and Amed, riders often take a 500cc
\nadventure bike or a 650cc touring machine. If you are staying in central Ubud and only riding to
\nthe Monkey Forest and back, a scooter is still the sensible, cheap choice.<\/p>\n
Ubud town centre is congested and one-way in places; the traffic wardens will point you the
\nright way. Roads north of town are in good condition but wet in the afternoons for much of the
\nyear \u2014 hill rain arrives fast. Watch for gravel on the corners after rain, and for dogs on the
\nvillage stretches. Fuel up before heading towards Kintamani; stations thin out above Tegallalang.<\/p>\n
Rates are the same wherever you ride from \u2014 we do not charge a premium for Ubud.
\nScooters and 155cc automatics start around 200,000 IDR per day. Mid-range bikes between
\n230cc and 500cc run roughly 300,000 to 600,000 IDR. Large-capacity machines \u2014 650cc cruisers,
\n900cc nakeds \u2014 start from about 1,000,000 IDR and reach 2,500,000 IDR for the top of the fleet.<\/p>\n
The minimum rental is three days \u2014 a one- or two-day hire is charged at the three-day rate
\nanyway, so you may as well keep the bike. From there the daily price drops at 7, 15 and 30 days.
\nIf you are staying a fortnight, booking the whole period at once is noticeably cheaper than two
\nshort rentals.<\/p>\n
Every rental includes a helmet. Insurance is an optional add-on rather than part of the base
\nrate, and we recommend it on anything above 250cc. A refundable deposit starts at 2,000,000 IDR
\nand rises with the value of the bike. To ride legally you need an International Driving Permit
\nendorsed for motorcycles.<\/p>\n
